Manteo High School junior Katelyn Rea has been tapped to attend the 2009 Governor's School of North Carolina. Katelyn is the daughter of Bill and Becki Rea of Manteo. Katelyn hopes to major in voice or musical theater in college, and aspires to land a spot on Broadway  - why not? Katelyn has been accepted to attend Governors School East (Meredith College) for a concentration in choral music.

The Governor's School of North Carolina is a six-week summer residential program for high school students that integrates academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades.

The Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program is located on two campuses of 400 students each: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem (begun in 1963), and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh (begun in 1978). The program is entirely free of charge to all students, funded by the General Assembly of North Carolina.
